The Elizabeth, NJ Stray

Posted by Nicole Asher on

Throughout my journey in lost dog recovery, I’ve had the privilege of meeting countless extraordinary people, each leaving an imprint on my heart. Last week was no exception.

I was contacted by Stacey Tombros of New Jersey Boxer Rescue about a frightened boxer mix who had been spotted by Elizabethtown Gas in Elizabeth, NJ. For months, this poor girl had been surviving on the run, darting away from anyone who tried to help. She navigated businesses along the Elizabeth River and the NJ Turnpike, an incredibly dangerous place for any animal, where each passing day was a gamble with her life.

When I arrived, I saw her almost immediately. She slipped under a fence and climbed to a berm along the river, watching me intently from her safe vantage point. I gave her space, pretending not to notice, quickly setting the trap before leaving her to her own cautious curiosity. Eventually, she crept back under the fence, circling the trap for what felt like forever, twenty long minutes of hesitation, scanning, and second-guessing before she finally stepped inside.

As the door closed behind her, we witnessed the fear and distrust that had consumed her for so long began to soften. It wasn’t instant, but there was a visible shift and a quiet surrender, a sigh of relief. In that moment, she knew she was safe.

At the shelter, once out of the trap, her transformation continued. She pressed herself against me, refusing to leave my side, shadowing every step I took. She had clearly been starved not only of safety, but of the simple comfort of human touch.

Thanks to her microchip, we were able to reach her owner. Out of love and compassion, and facing personal circumstances, they made the selfless decision to sign her over to rescue. It was an act of grace, choosing what was best for her, above all else.

I’ve always believed that everything happens for a reason, that the universe has a way of bringing the right people together at exactly the right time. And now, this sweet girl is safe.

My deepest gratitude goes out to Stacey Tombros, Ethan, Rob, and Scott, and to Elizabethtown Gas, for not only opening their gates but their hearts. Thank you to Tyco Animal Control for answering my call without hesitation and providing her with a safe haven as we secured rescue placement. This is compassion in action and a testament to what is possible when people come together for a lost soul in need.

My heart is full. Another life is safe.
